Adam's Hawk

Adam's Dad brought in a hawk he shot so that we could have a look at its impressive wings, we also noticed the large yellow claws which Adam's Dad will preserve at home.  We learnt that there are so many hawks now that they are becoming pests to farmers and preying on young stock like piglets and lambs, therefore they need to be shot.  Kelly told us about his previous job hunting goats and showed us a picture of a pig he killed on his phone as well as him with a Trophy head stag!

We also marvelled a cool picture of Adam the Hunter with a rabbit he shot...

Thanks for sharing these stories with us Kelly, we know you are working hard and appreciate the time you took today to speak to the class and answer questions about hunting!

Pink Shirt Day

To acknowledge anti-bullying globally we all dressed in pink/red on Friday 20th May.  We toured the bake off in the hall and received jelly bands and stickers from the campaign.  WHen we returned to class we had a very special morning tea because Owen's Mum and Cressida-Lyn's Mum baked for us and Heleina's family sent in cupcakes, they were all delicious thank-you whaanau!!

We talked about what we can say to Bullies and decided the best strategy is to just walk away ;)
Thankfully we all get along so beautifully it is never an issue in class, Room 3 ROCKS!!!

Matariki Learning

We learnt this waiata in singing today with the Kowhai Team, it is about the seven stars of Matariki;

Waiti

Waita

Waipunarangi

Tupuanuku

Tupuarangi

Ururangi

and Matariki

We have also heard this pakiwaitara/story of the patu paraiarehe/fairy woman who try to trick Mitai's brothers...then they trap the woman and throw them up to the sky goddess to be the seven stars of Matariki.  Now we have found copies of the story in the library we have acted it out together and are taking turns reading the story with whaanau at home.

Storytelling pakiwaitara

Reading Buddies

Today we created Learning Buddies to use to point to our words as we read or use as book marks, I got the idea from another Teacher's Blog, click here to see her Reading 'Tracker' idea.  Dean also came up with the idea to make boomerangs after this which they enjoyed at playtime outside.

Now Adam did make a Reading buddy it was hairy and had sharp teeth!  but he wanted a photo of his marble run on the blog instead so here it is...
