Quick 60 Alphabet Resource

We are using a literacy resource called 'Quick 60' now in the Junior Team.  This resource helps children connect a Letter with its sound and identify lower and upper case letters as well as words that begin with that letter in a short poem.
Today we were learning abut 'T' for Turtle, Table, Telephone, Tiger and Tadpole...

Handwriting with Squiggler

Today we used You Tube to assist with our letter formation in Handwriting, we follow Squiggler's directions and we learnt letters s-z, lower case and italic.  Squigglet makes it fun with magic writing pens and rhyme.

There are pictures of three things that begin with that letter so we can build up more letter/phonic knowledge in a fun interactive way.  We used the whiteboards and began with the whole date after identifying the day, date and month on our class calendar.

To try Squiggler at home with your child click here to begin on the Letter Aa :)

Blue Whio Duck and Stoat visit...

Yesterday we had a visit from the Department of Conservation education officer Krysia, she brought in a Blue Whio and a Stoat and told us about how the Stoat which is a pest they are trying to trap, kills the Blue Whio Duck out in the wild.

We were fascinated with its sharp teeth and then she read us the story of Whetu the Blue Whio who escaped a Stoat and got lost, then found a mate in the river.  Later on in the year we may visit the Troat Hatchery and see the Blue Whio living there.  The children are learning about the significance of our native wildlife and how DOC are taking care of these special birds/manu.

Later on in the day we coloured in a picture of Blue Whio ducks to enter a colouring in competition and maybe win a prize!
